How to install spark plugs?

I have a 2005 Subaru Forester And I want to replace my spark plugs myself. What is the proper way to install them? Do I have to lube the treads before I put them in? If so what would I use or what would you reconmmend I use to lube them? How to install spark plugs?Acessing the plugs is different on different models of cars, but once you have the plugs visible, you use a 5/8th spark plug socket to remove them, a spark plug socket will be labeled as such, at a tool store, and has a rubber boot inside of it, that holds the spark plug from falling out of the socket, this will allow you to raise and lower them from the deep holes that they are located in without them falling out of the socket. Spark plug sockets are only a couple of dollars, and often come with ratchet sets already included.

You should always be sure to dust out the area around the spark plug wells to be sure it is clear fo debris, and dirt since when you remove the spark plug dirt and debris can fall directly into the comnbustion chamber. Use an air dusting attatchment on your compressor, or simply buy one of those spray cans for cleaning out keyboards, do this before you remove the spark plugs of course.

Before installing the plugs, you should use a spark plug gapping tool, to ensure that they are gapped properly, even plugs that claim to be pregapped, sometimes get damaged during shipping, so you shoudl check them. Spark plug gapping tools only cost $1.99 typically.

You should remove the spark plugs one at a time and replace them one at a time, so that the combustion chambers are prone to falling debris for as little time as possible, with a spark plug removed, you can now insert the new spark plug, You can if you wish, use an anti seize compound, which you spread on the trheads of the plug to prevent it from sticking next time you goto remove it. gently thread the plug in by hand being very carefull not to cross thread them, once it is in by hand, tighten them with a wrench to the specified torque for your vehicle, in most cars the torque for sprak plugs is 12-15 ft/lbs. You do not have to lube the threads, but in engines where spark plugs are not easily reached, it may be a good idea, so that you dont become frustrated because they are stuck and you can get your arm in to apply enough force to them next time you goto remove them.

On DOHC engines, the spark plugs may not be accessable unless you remove a cover overtop the valve cover, where they become visible, that cover may be simply a plstic peice, or an entire assembly of some type.

Good luckHow to install spark plugs?Any copper based grease will help prevent them from seizing in the head.

Something like 'Copperease'. You just want a smear on the threads. Don't get it on the electrode,( the sticky out bit at the end). Just a smear on the threads will do. It is a very high temperature grease so you won't have it running anywhere.

It's also worth smearing it on the back of your alloy wheels where they contact the wheel hubs. Alloys can stick like you wouldn't believe! A friend of mine took her car(a 2.8 Capri) to get some new tyres and the fitter actuallty broke one of her alloys trying to get it off with a sledge hammer!

Either smear it on the hub, or your wheel itself. Just don't get it on your brake disc. How to install spark plugs? Before you start, you must have your Sparkplugs installation CD and the product key available.

Depending on the installation method that you select, you might need a boot CD or boot disks. If you do not have your Sparkplugs CD or boot disks, you must obtain them in order to install or upgrade to Sparkplugs by using certain methods. Review the methods to determine what media you will need.

If the installation method that you select requires you to start your computer from the Sparkplugs CD, your CD or DVD drive must be configured to do this. For information about how to configure your computer to start from the CD or DVD drive, see the documentation that is included with your computer or contact the computer manufacturer.

I don't think you need any lube to install the software. How to install spark plugs?you can use anti- seize compound on the threads before installing them. it will make it easier to get them back out the next time you change them.
