My car is starting to get a little sluggish and it's been about 50000km since it was done.How often should I replace my spark plugs in my 2002 Saturn SC1?I do it ever year even if it does not need it. I gap 'em at about 34 thousands of an inch, with your electronic ignition, you'll probably want 41.



I'll share a couple axioms of auto repair with you. The first is:

If it works, don't fix it.



The second is: If you're guessing, guess the cheap and easy stuff first, expensive complicated stuff when you run out. So . . .

Check your air cleaner. If it's dirty, you may have fixed your problem.

Check under the distributer cap (if you have one). Even though you don't have points, clean stuff works better than dirty stuff any day of the week. A scale of electrons collects on those 4, 6 or 8 contacts up inside the cap. Chipping it off can sometimes be the difference between a bullet and a slug.

Sluggish could mean your injectors aren't injecting like they used to. I've never owned a car with injectors, but from what I understand, you can't clean injectors %26amp; re-use them. The minuit you stick anything in the injector to clean it, you've mucked up the injector spray pattern. If they can't be made to flow better (i.e. spray better) by using some kind of gas additive injector cleaner, they have to be replaced. The best evidence of clogged injectors is hard starting.

The most expensive thing that I would try to avod fiddling with at all costs is the on-board computer that meters fuel and spark timing. Go here only if necessary.
