How many volts do spark plugs run on?

I know that it gives off 20,000+ volts but i need to know how much voltage i need as an input voltage. How many volts do spark plugs run on?There are actually different voltages going to the coil. The full voltage of the battery (a little over 12 volts) goes to the coil while the ignition key is in the start position, and when the key is released, and goes to the run position the voltage is reduced about 15%. In earlier automobiles this was done by rerouting the current through a ballast or primary resistor. check the diagram at the following web site: http://www.familycar.com/CLASSROOM/ignit ...Good Luck...How many volts do spark plugs run on?your ignition coil produces the spark needed to fire the spark plug. 20K is on the low end, some cars now run 60K - 100K.

Anyway, 12Volts DC is the input.

As the coil is powered up on the primary side and then voltage is taken away the pulse through the coil creates your high voltage spark on the secondary side, down your plug wire and through the spark plugHow many volts do spark plugs run on?As an input voltage to what? The coil cranks on approximately 11 volts and runs on about half the vehicle's voltage after it starts up.How many volts do spark plugs run on?It depends on the year of the vehicle... Vehicles of the teens often run on a magneto, using both a wet cell and dry cell battery so starting voltage can be relatively low.

The ignition system (primarily coil) uses 12 volts and a resistor (sometimes referred to as a ballast resistor) to reduce the input voltage to roughly 6 to 8 volts. This electricity (low voltage) goes into windings around an iron core which creates and inductive current (high voltage)... when the low voltage circuit is completed to ground (through points, or an ignition control module, etc) the inductive current is %26quot;released%26quot; through the core into the ignition coil wire to the spark plug. Voltage out of the coil ranges 20,000 to 100,000 volts and across the spark plug gap.

So a recap... voltage in - 6 to 8 volts, voltage out - 20k to 100k volts.

I hope this helps.
